My Backyard Sports is a franchise business that specializes in designing and installing customized sports courts and athletic surfaces. The concept began in 2017 in the United States as a local service dedicated to building high-quality backyard sports setups. Today, the company is based in Closter, New Jersey, where it manages franchise development and overall system support.

The brand moved into franchising in 2020 after seeing strong consumer interest and consistent demand for its services. The company’s services cover the full range of athletic-court construction.

Franchise locations provide custom basketball courts, pickleball and tennis courts, multi-sport installations, artificial turf, equipment setup, surfacing solutions, and court striping or painting. Each project follows a complete turnkey process, from initial design to finished installation.

What sets My Backyard Sports apart is its emphasis on tailored, professional-grade results. The franchise uses high-quality materials, customized configurations, and a concierge-style project experience to create standout athletic spaces. This upscale service approach helps franchisees distinguish themselves in a rapidly expanding niche market.

Training

My Backyard Sports provides a comprehensive suite of training programs to prepare franchisees for successful operation. These include both mandatory and optional sessions, delivered through a blend of in-person, virtual, and on-site formats. The following training components are outlined in the franchise agreement:

  1. Initial Management Training Program: This is mandatory for franchisees and their General Manager and must be completed at least four weeks before opening. It includes classroom and hands-on training conducted at the franchisor’s headquarters, a franchised location, or virtually. Up to two people may attend at no charge, though all related expenses such as travel and lodging are the franchisee’s responsibility.
  2. Opening Assistance: During the business launch, a trained franchisor representative will provide up to three days of on-site supervision and assistance to ensure proper implementation of operational procedures. This initial support is provided at no additional cost to the franchisee.
  3. Additional and Ongoing Training: Franchisees may be required to attend mandatory annual conventions or business meetings, each lasting up to five days. Optional and remedial training may also be provided upon request or as deemed necessary by the franchisor, with associated costs such as per diem fees and travel expenses charged to the franchisee.

Territory Protection

My Backyard Sports provides its franchisees with a defined, limited protected territory, typically based on zip codes and demographic criteria. While franchisees are given the right to operate exclusively within this area, the franchisor does not grant exclusive territories.

Franchisees may face competition from other franchisees, company-owned outlets, or other distribution channels controlled by the franchisor. Although the franchisor agrees not to establish or license another My Backyard Sports franchise within a franchisee’s designated territory during the term of the agreement, it retains broad rights to sell its products and services through alternate channels.

These include retail, the Internet, and direct marketing, even within the assigned territory. Furthermore, the franchisor may serve large-scale or “Key Accounts” and merge with or acquire competitors without providing the franchisee any rights or compensation for those actions.
