Gideon Math & Reading is a supplemental-education franchise that provides after-school math and reading programs for children, helping build strong foundational skills and academic confidence.
The system began as a family learning center created by Wendy Coppedge in 2004, building on the family’s involvement in supplemental education since 1991. Gideon evolved into a full tutoring program by 2002 and began franchising in 2011. The company is headquartered in Addison, Texas.
Gideon’s core offering is a proprietary curriculum built around more than 500 sequenced workbooks. Students, typically ages 4 through 12 and beyond, work at their own pace under guided, individualized instruction to master essential math and reading skills before progressing to the next level.
The franchise differentiates itself with a mastery-based, self-paced learning approach, a low student-to-teacher ratio, and highly structured daily practice. This model stands out from traditional tutoring and group-class programs by focusing on personalized learning, confidence building, and strong foundational competence for long-term academic success.
Here's what you would need to invest if you were to start this franchise. These costs are provided by the franchisor in the Franchise Disclosure Document.

Gideon Math & Reading offers a structured and comprehensive training program to ensure franchisee readiness:
Gideon Math & Reading offers its franchisees a protected territory, defined either as a Retail Franchise Territory or a Non-Retail Franchise Territory. For retail locations, the protected area typically spans a ten-minute driving radius from the approved center, while non-retail centers are granted a smaller, two-minute radius.
This territory is approximated at the time full payment is made and reserved for 90 days, during which Gideon will not offer it to other franchisees. The territory is confirmed once the franchisee's location is approved and a lease is signed, ensuring no other Gideon Center will be placed within that territory during the agreement term.
However, this protection does not prevent Gideon from servicing or accepting clients residing within the franchisee’s area, nor from placing another center outside of it.
