Gideon Math & Reading is a supplemental-education franchise that provides after-school math and reading programs for children, helping build strong foundational skills and academic confidence.

The system began as a family learning center created by Wendy Coppedge in 2004, building on the family’s involvement in supplemental education since 1991. Gideon evolved into a full tutoring program by 2002 and began franchising in 2011. The company is headquartered in Addison, Texas.

Gideon’s core offering is a proprietary curriculum built around more than 500 sequenced workbooks. Students, typically ages 4 through 12 and beyond, work at their own pace under guided, individualized instruction to master essential math and reading skills before progressing to the next level.

The franchise differentiates itself with a mastery-based, self-paced learning approach, a low student-to-teacher ratio, and highly structured daily practice. This model stands out from traditional tutoring and group-class programs by focusing on personalized learning, confidence building, and strong foundational competence for long-term academic success.

Training

Gideon Math & Reading offers a structured and comprehensive training program to ensure franchisee readiness:

  1. Initial Training Program: New franchisees are required to complete an initial training program that includes home training materials, online training access, and eight days of in-person training at the company’s headquarters in Addison, Texas. This must be completed within 90 days of executing the Franchise Agreement to secure their territory.
  2. Online and Pre-Requisite Requirements: The online portion of the training must be successfully completed before the in-person training will be scheduled. The training fee of $5,000 is non-refundable under any circumstances.
  3. Ongoing Guidance: After opening, franchisees receive weekly support for the first 90 days, including phone or email check-ins to discuss operational issues. Ongoing training and development are provided through optional meetings, seminars, and access to updates and curriculum changes.
  4. Optional and Additional Training: While no additional training is required after the initial program, Gideon may offer further educational opportunities, conferences, and support meetings at its Addison office, which the franchisee may attend at their own expense.
  5. Training for Directors: If the franchise is operated by a business entity, the designated Center Director must also complete the full training program and be physically present at the Center at least 75% of the time it is open for classes.

Territory Protection

Gideon Math & Reading offers its franchisees a protected territory, defined either as a Retail Franchise Territory or a Non-Retail Franchise Territory. For retail locations, the protected area typically spans a ten-minute driving radius from the approved center, while non-retail centers are granted a smaller, two-minute radius.

This territory is approximated at the time full payment is made and reserved for 90 days, during which Gideon will not offer it to other franchisees. The territory is confirmed once the franchisee's location is approved and a lease is signed, ensuring no other Gideon Center will be placed within that territory during the agreement term.

However, this protection does not prevent Gideon from servicing or accepting clients residing within the franchisee’s area, nor from placing another center outside of it.
