Sushi Avenue is a sushi restaurant franchise that focuses on delivering fresh and high-quality sushi to customers. Franchisees receive comprehensive training, marketing assistance, and ongoing support for day-to-day operations.

Sushi Avenue, established in 2004, began as a sushi supplier focused on the supermarket sector. Headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota, the company expanded into the restaurant business in 2009, bringing freshly prepared sushi to a broader audience.

Training

Sushi Avenue provides a structured and multi-faceted training program to its franchisees, delivered by the Franchisor. The training programs include the following components:

  1. Initial Training Program: This mandatory program must be attended and completed by the Principal Operating Officer/Partner, each equity owner, and at least one Sushi Bar manager. It includes an initial training fee of $500 per person and $250 for ServSafe Training and Testing. Additional sushi chef training is required if any attendees lack sufficient experience, as judged by the Franchisor.
  2. Ongoing Training Programs: These are periodically offered throughout the year and may include seminars, courses, and specialized training sessions. Attendance is compulsory, and associated costs such as fees, travel, lodging, and meals must be covered by the Franchisee.
  3. Remedial Training: If a Franchisee is found in default of operating procedures, the Franchisor can mandate a one or two-day remedial training for specified staff, with a cost of $500 per day plus expenses.
  4. Advisory Support: The Franchisor provides ongoing advice and consultation on operations, sales, food preparation, and management. This support may come via visits from representatives, or through distributed materials such as DVDs, publications, or streaming content.

Territory Protection

Sushi Avenue does not provide comprehensive territory protection to its franchisees. While a territory may be granted under the franchise agreement, the franchisor retains the right to operate or authorize competing businesses within the same area.

This means that franchisees could face competition from the franchisor itself, even within what might be considered their exclusive territory. The agreement emphasizes that despite any territorial grant, the franchisor’s competitive rights remain intact.

This includes the right to open additional outlets or permit other franchisees to operate nearby. As a result, franchisees should not expect geographic exclusivity or immunity from internal competition under the Sushi Avenue system.
