Togo's is a renowned fast-casual sandwich franchise that began in 1971 in San Jose, California, when a college student opened a small sandwich shop near San Jose State University.

The name "Togo's" originated from the shop's emphasis on take-out service. The franchise is currently headquartered in Campbell, California. Togo's started franchising in 1977 and has since expanded to nearly 180 locations across the western United States.

Togo's specializes in made-to-order sandwiches, wraps, and salads, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Signature offerings include premium pastrami, hand-mashed Hass avocados, and artisan bread baked daily.

Training

Togo’s provides a detailed training structure to ensure franchisees and their teams are properly equipped to operate a restaurant within its system. Here are the training programs offered:

  1. Initial Training Program: Togo’s provides this program at no charge for two people (one of whom must be the Certified Manager) if opening a new restaurant, and for one person if acquiring an existing one. This training takes place at designated Togo’s training centers and includes operational and compliance instruction.
  2. Certified Manager Requirement: Every restaurant must have a Certified Manager who has successfully completed the franchisor’s training program. If a Certified Manager departs, a new one must be trained and certified within two months.
  3. Experienced Franchisee Program: Franchisees with prior experience may qualify for a modified training plan. They must still complete specific training like Togo’s Business Training, two weeks of in-restaurant training, and food safety training.
  4. Employee Training: Franchisees are responsible for ensuring all employees are trained in Togo’s operating procedures. The franchisor may also require attendance in supplemental training sessions from time to time.

Territory Protection

Togo’s does not offer exclusive territory protection. Each franchise is tied to a specific location and does not prevent the franchisor from opening or licensing other locations nearby. Franchisees may face competition from other Togo’s units or distribution channels.

The franchisor retains full rights to operate or authorize others to operate anywhere, including within the same market. Multi-unit agreements may grant development rights in a defined area, but these do not guarantee exclusivity or customer base protection.
