D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches is a fast-casual concept recognized for its generous grilled sandwiches and inviting neighborhood atmosphere. The chain traces its beginnings to 1967, when founders Brian J. McLaughlin and Jay Howland opened the first location in Dedham, Massachusetts.
Over the decades, the brand has expanded throughout New England and now operates as part of New England Authentic Eats, which is also based in Dedham. The menu includes a mix of grilled and deli sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and a variety of rice and grain bowls.
One of the franchise’s most popular offerings is the “Number 9®,” a made-to-order combination of grilled steak or chicken, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and melted American cheese served on Italian or Pokket® bread. The emphasis on freshly prepared meals underscores the brand’s focus on quality and community-driven service.
Franchising efforts began in 1973, helping D’Angelo expand its footprint across the region. Today, the franchise operates more than 80 restaurants throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, and Connecticut.

D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches provides a comprehensive training structure to ensure franchisees are equipped to operate effectively. Here are the key training programs offered:
New Franchisee Orientation Program (NFOP) This is a two-day program conducted in Dedham, Massachusetts, before opening or taking possession of the first restaurant. It gives an overview of the D’Angelo system, services provided to franchisees, and key obligations under the franchise agreement.
Initial Training Program This mandatory program is provided to the franchisee (or designated principal), Restaurant General Manager, and at least one Restaurant Manager. It is held at a franchisor-designated location, covering operations, systems, and standards. The franchisor bears the cost of instruction and materials.
Highly Trained Personnel Requirement Each restaurant must have at least one individual on staff who has completed the Required Management Training (RMT). This ensures continuity of standards and operational quality.
Replacement Training Franchisees are entitled to two free replacement training sessions during the agreement term, for up to three individuals per session. Beyond this, a fee applies for additional training, and all travel and attendance costs are borne by the franchisee.
Territory Protection
D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches provides franchisees with a “Protected Territory,” typically defined as a circle centered on the front door of the restaurant, with the radius specified in the Franchise Agreement.
Within this area, the franchisor agrees not to establish or license another D’Angelo restaurant, unless exceptions apply—such as for institutional facilities or captive market locations. The size and nature of the territory are based on factors like population, competition, and demographics.
However, this protection is not absolute. The franchisor reserves the right to modify the Protected Territory during the term of the agreement, especially if population changes occur.
