Self Made Training Facility Franchise FDD, Costs & Fees (2025)

Self Made Training Facility is a fitness-facility franchise offering personal training, group sessions and performance coaching in a boutique facility, serving serious adult fitness clients, and known for trainer-driven culture, scalable studio footprint and modern branding.

Self Made Training Facility (SMTF) is a fitness franchise concept that originated in 2013 in Southern California. What began as a modest garage-based operation soon transformed into a rapidly expanding brand centered on high-performance fitness and one-on-one personal training.

Over the years, SMTF has grown into a nationwide system, offering a franchise model designed specifically for fitness professionals who want to run their own training facility. The company operates from its headquarters in Temecula, California.

The franchise arm of the business was created in 2016, formally launching the brand’s expansion through franchising. SMTF gives entrepreneurs a chance to open a facility that prioritizes trainer-driven services rather than the usual membership-focused gym format.

Each facility is built to host independent personal trainers who use the space to serve and expand their client base. This approach creates a mutually beneficial model for both franchise owners and the trainers who work within the facility.

What sets Self Made Training Facility apart is its emphasis on supporting trainer entrepreneurship. Instead of depending on monthly gym memberships, the concept revolves around providing a premium, professional environment where trainers can operate their own businesses and offer personalized fitness services.

Training

Self Made Training Facility® offers a comprehensive training program designed to prepare franchisees for successful business operations. The training covers both pre-opening requirements and ongoing education components, using various instructional methods to adapt to different learning needs.

  1. Initial Training Program
Prior to opening, the franchisor provides an initial training program for up to two individuals—typically the franchisee’s principal owner and a managerial employee. This 5-day, 43-hour training must be completed to the franchisor’s satisfaction. It includes various instructional formats such as in-person lectures, self-study, online modules, DVDs, on-the-job practice, and service participation.
  2. Training Location and Structure
Training is conducted at locations designated by the franchisor, often the corporate facility in Temecula, California, and franchisees are responsible for their travel and lodging expenses. The content, duration, and format are determined solely by the franchisor, and any failure to successfully complete training may lead to re-enrollment or termination of the agreement.
  3. Ongoing Training and Continuing Education
The franchisor may require additional training, either upon request or based on operational needs. A standard fee of $500 per day applies for extra sessions, and a monthly Training and Continuing Education Fee (up to $500) may be charged for virtual instruction and continued learning.

Territory Protection

Self Made Training Facility® grants franchisees a “Protected Territory” defined by mutually agreed-upon geographic boundaries such as cities, counties, zip codes, or mileage radii. As long as the franchisee complies with the agreement, the franchisor will not authorize another Self Made Training Facility to operate privately within this territory.

Franchisees may accept clients from outside their territory but must only provide services at their own facility location. However, this territorial protection is not exclusive in all respects. The franchisor retains the right to operate or license other facilities under the same or different trademarks both inside and outside the Protected Territory, especially in non-traditional venues like airports, hotels, or amusement parks.

They may also sell branded products and services through any distribution channel, including online, regardless of impact to the franchisee’s business and without offering compensation.
